The Importance of Transcription to Transcribers
March 25th, 2008For those of us who have transcribed regularly through our lives to make a living, there is often little thought as to what it is we may actually be typing about. The truth of the matter is, for most of us, offering transcription services is a way to make money relatively quickly using a skill we already possess – not a way to create even more questions about the world at large.
But what ends up happening can be interesting; suddenly we have a whole new outlook on topics and subject matters we may not even have known about – much less had an opinion about.
So why is that relevant? Why does that matter in the world of transcription?
The bottom line is that the majority of transcriptionists fall within a demographic that has a history of being marginalized. Knowing more and always adding to our arsenals of knowledge will make us that much more powerful; and transcribing helps us do just that.
So all that typing about the stock exchange, specialized industry, and all that use of complex financial jargon and medical terminology that was all a mystery before we learned to transcribe really does add up to knowing more about the issues that shape our world.
All of that translates to a broader spectrum of knowledge and understanding. The better we know today’s trends in the medical and pharmaceutical field or the marketplace, or how much a barrel of oil costs and why, the better equipped we are to see the big picture.
So while transcription work is a great way to pay the bills, get the kids through school and make ends meet, it’s also a phenomenal resource in educating ourselves about the current events that are shaping our world.
